WTC Law Enforcement Classes Visit the Yaphank Correctional Facility

On Friday, November 17, Law Enforcement classes from the H.B. Ward Technical Center had 42 students participate in the Youth Enlightenment Seminar (YES) at the Yaphank Correctional Facility. The YES Tour is an immersive experience that provides first-hand exposure to the realities of the criminal justice system and the consequences of poor choices. During the tour, students visited the secure housing units, common areas, and intake processing center. They also had the opportunity to meet with current inmates and learn about their personal experiences.

The tour was run by Corrections Officers Jason Graff, Michael Vansteen and Nyasia Brandon who discussed the job requirements and the Civil Service pathway for the position. Officer Brandon positively impacted and inspired the students as she stated that she is a graduate from H.B. Ward and discussed how beneficial the Law Enforcement class was in starting her career.

The Law Enforcement classes were accompanied by their teacher, Mr. Jim Lyons and Teacher Assistant, Mr. Joe Nuzzo who are both retired NYPD Officers.

The YES Tour is a valuable educational experience that helps students develop a deeper understanding of the profession, criminal justice system and the impact of crime on individuals and communities.
