    MAKING THE HOLIDAY BRIGHT!

Mr. Ricciardo, Barbering teacher, his family, and Ms. Marzigliano, Dental Chairside Assisting teacher, held a Holiday Outreach to help make the holiday bright for local families in need.  With the generosity of BTC staff and friends, they reached their goal and collected toys and clothes for over 70 families and 260 children in need throughout our local community.  All donations will be delivered to the families this weekend with wishes for a happy, healthy holiday season.  We would like to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness, support and for spreading joy and happiness this holiday season!

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) knows how to pull together as an agency. One month of non-stop fundraising efforts across the organization resulted in raising a sum of approximately $11,000 earmarked for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the non-profit that benefits childhood cancer research and awareness. The Barbering and Cosmetology Programs at the three Academy technical centers, as well as their counterparts in the Special Career Education Program at Islip Career Center and the Special Education Program at Islip Academic Center, each held successful fundraising events. Select salon services (green hair extensions, glitter tattoos, hand paraffin treatments, and manicures) were available, as well as the signature St. Baldrick’s head shave, in addition to retails items, which were available for purchase. Barbering Teacher Luke Mahoney organized these events across the agency and has been doing so for years. He also recognized eight ESBOCES colleagues for their years of fundraising dedication in a symbolic St. Baldrick’s ceremony that bestowed honorary titles, such as Knight of the Bald Table.

The campaign culminated at the final event when ESBOCES COO Dr. Julie Davis Lutz and District Superintendent David Wicks both had "ESB" (for Eastern Suffolk BOCES) engraved at the base of their scalps, shaved their heads, and received a few temporary green shamrock tattoos for this great cause. Said Mahoney, “I am a cancer survivor and a teacher. Doing what I can to put an end to this disease while instilling that vital sense of community within my students, by participating in and promoting events such as these, is essential as an instructor.”

  • BARBERING STUDENTS ATTEND STAND DOWN FOR HOMELESS VETERANS AT THE NORTHPORT VA HOSPITAL

Posted by Rob Van Brunt on 9/29/2017

Mr. Ricciardo, and several of his barbering students, participated in the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event held at the Northport Va Hospital on September 29, 2017 where they provided barbering services (haircuts and shaves) to the homeless veterans.   Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs' efforts to provide services to homeless veterans, providing services  such as food, shelter, clothing, health screening, VA and Social Security benefit counseling, and referrals to a variety of other necessary services, such as housing, employment and substance abuse treatment.  This experience provided our students with hands on barbering experience as well as the opportunity to be part of such an important event.  The barbering students particpate in this event each year and are honored to particpate and show their appreciation to our much deserving veterans.
